Members of EDHB,
I thought that it would be prudent to talk about the status of our club. As we approach nearly 600 members, I wanted to point out that a requirement of membership is an obligation to actively participate in club functions and maintenance of the range. While Seniors are also obligated to participate in Club functions, they are also encouraged, but not required to participate in the maintenance of the club. Enforcement of these requirements up to now have been overlooked and may require changes in the near future. The possibility of assigning individuals to be responsible for a given target for a period of six months to a year has been suggested.
Each workday participation is rewarded with a 15% discount for the next years renewal with a maximum of 45% credit. The current lack of participation has become concerning. Apart from the Board of Directors, we average about 1% of the membership showing up for scheduled workdays. Many requests for help by social media, website, email and bulletin board postings have been predominately ignored. The Board of Directors should not be put in the position of begging for help. It should also be noted that the Board of Directors should not be expected to perform the majority of work needed.
General Membership Meetings are held monthly, and attendance has become dismal at best. These meetings are scheduled to make time available for members to voice their concerns, present ideas, or to get to know one another. We present proposal regarding our budget, and review operational issues. Confronting a Board of Director member on a spur of the moment basis outside of a meeting has become commonplace and needs to be discontinued. We make all decisions collectively after reviewing all available information.
With the ever-rising costs of goods, we need more help than ever. The more participation we receive enables us to spend less on outside vendors. Insurance has doubled, paper targets and cardboard backing have nearly doubled. Target butts/backstops now cost $800 each with shipping. Weed abatement has become outrageous. The cost of goats on our property has nearly doubled over the last few years. Legislation has been put in place recently that may threaten the herding industry causing many to consider ceasing operations. Should that happen, we will require more weed whacking to be in compliance with the fire department.
Our range has been at our current location since 1963. The reality is that unless we receive an increase in members helping with tasks on a regular basis, those that currently provide help will burn out. Lack of participation may ultimately cause the demise of our club. Keep in mind that our lease renews next year.
During the month of October, we have our annual nominations for Board of Directors positions. Should you have an interest to serve or have a person in mind to nominate for a position let us know. We currently have a vacancy for the Range Manager position. Nominations will be presented at our October Members Meeting. Voting will commence in November, and new appointees will start their positions on January 1st.
It has been an honor working with a dedicated Board of Directors. Collectively, with the help of a few member’s hard work, we have become a premier archery destination in Northern California.
Respectfully,
Kayo Shiveley
President
El Dorado Hills Bowmen
